If I Had Wings

If I had wings with which to follow the sun
as it crossed the beaches and lit on the lawns
of some timeless hamlet neighboring the sea,
I would surely see with new found eyes
the works of God in all their glory,
a setting rich with history -
a picture-page from a childhood story,
the return of a long forgotten memory.
And if these wings let me follow the sun
to alight on those lawns and share in the fun
of gold and blue summers
and friends old and new,
I would not waste a minute thinking
of life’s horrible tensions swarming in droves -
the deadlines, the highways, the meal on the stove
for the sun would have steered me to our Ocean Grove.
